How to Make a Traditional Mud Pan Last Longer

Traditional steel and plastic mud pans should be cleaned immediately after every job. Once drywall compound hardens inside a rigid pan, it can be extremely difficult and time-consuming to remove. It may require soaking and heavy scraping, especially around the corners and knife-cleaning edges.

Dried compound buildup can contaminate fresh mud and prevent a clean knife wipe. Steel pans should also be dried completely after washing to help prevent rust. When buildup or normal wear begins affecting cleanup, control or performance, it is time to replace the pan.
